Indications:
Protecardin is intended for use in adults.
Protecardin contains the active substance acetylsalicylic acid.
Acetylsalicylic acid (Protecardin) belongs to a group of medicines called antiplatelet agents. Protecardin works by preventing the aggregation (“sticking together”) of blood cells called thrombocytes (or blood platelets) and thus prevents the formation of blood clots (thrombi).
Due to this effect, Protecardin is used for:
- preventing the recurrence of myocardial infarction and stroke (transient ischemic attack and cerebral infarction);
- reducing the risk of myocardial infarction in patients with angina pectoris (known as painful chronic ischemic cardiopathy), or with multiple risk factors, such as: high blood pressure, increased blood lipid levels (hypercholesterolemia), smoking, diabetes mellitus and family history;
- maintaining blood circulation in the blood vessels of the heart after certain surgical interventions (vascular surgery, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, coronary bypass).
Important: Protecardin is not intended for the treatment of pain or fever; for this purpose, other medicines containing acetylsalicylic acid in appropriate doses (500 mg) should be used.
Contraindications:
Do not use Protecardin:
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to acetylsalicylic acid, other salicylates or any of the other ingredients of Protecardin.
Precautions:
Before using Protecardin, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
Do not use Protecardin if you are in the last trimester of pregnancy. In the first two trimesters of pregnancy, take Protecardin only if your doctor recommends it.
During breast-feeding, take Protecardin only if your doctor recommends it.
Driving and using machines:
Protecardin does not affect your ability to drive or use machines.
How to take:
Always use Protecardin exactly as your doctor has told you. You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Dosage:
Adults: For long-term treatment, the usual dose is 1–2 Protecardin 75 mg gastro-resistant tablets once a day.
In short-term treatment, on the recommendation of your doctor, in acute coronary syndrome or ischemic stroke, higher doses of up to 300 mg acetylsalicylic acid may be appropriate. Thereafter, treatment will continue with the dose recommended for long-term treatment.
Children and adolescents:
Protecardin is not administered to children and adolescents.
